The answer BTW, is the Protestants: so thoroughly that even modern Catholics would be considered Protestant by 16C standards.

There is a great book we mention in another piece (and discuss in full on Blood $atellite) called "Tri-Faith America" which recounts the story of how both Jews and Catholics arrived in America and subverted the entire existing protestant establishment, forcing it to voluntarily cede its power by driving it to live up to the extremes of its principles.
